Personalmente creo que una de las razones por las que estoy aca en este mundo es para ayudar a hacerlo mejor

y tengo la certeza que si todos ponemos un grano de arena en absolutamente todo lo que hagamos y a todos los que impactemos podremos hacer cosas grandes

Por esta razon considero vital que nos dediquemos a hacer lo mejor que podamos en nuestro camino y cuando ya hayamos hecho lo mejor siempre nos acordemos que podemos hacerlo mucho mejor.

We are deities sent to learn, love and care

Avatar is a 2009 fictional film created by James Cameron. I'd talk about the movie but I guess you have seen it and if you haven't then you really should 'cause it's pretty amazing but not only because of the production but because of the message it has, and that's what I'm talking about today.

To Pandora arrives an Avatar brought up by the deity to save the Na'vi and Eywa from destruction by humans. But regretfully the only thing fictional about this movie is the planet and the Na'vi, everything else is real and happens everyday. We came to earth as humans and we keep destroying it everyday, doing our best to take all of its resources without any consideration and the earth is feeling the consequences and it's reacting against it. It is of the utmost importance that we transform into Avatars to start taking care of the earth 'cause right now it needs us and not only to take care of it but to restore the destruction we've made so far. to make that it's of the utmost importance that we start by listening to the earth spirit and begin to learn from it, to really care of the resources and every living being without any consideration to what natural kingdom belongs. If we don't get moving with this not only it will mean the destruction of the eco-system but also the destruction of human way of life as we know it. The time is Now!

The way of the Samurai

Samurai is a word referred to the higher ranking military in Japan in the old times, but basically it means a server, someone who serves others (usually nobler than himself) and that's what life should be about, serving others.

If we cared for others deeply and did our best to serve as best as possible we could also find pretty easily other people serving us and it would form a infinite chain of people serving one another.

And what if we served a higher purpose? What if we served to improve ourselves, to make the earth shine more, to learn how to take advantage more wisely of the earth resources without destroying it, to understand each living creature regardless of where would they or it came from.

We should definitely think of living a Samurai way.

The Rat Race and the life race

We constantly struggle through life to earn money, an important
position in a big company, loads of degrees, fame recognition, etc. To
do this we spend lots of our time working as hard as possible, lots of
time enclosed in a office in front of a computer, giving up lots of
concessions, kissing lots of asses and doing things we dislike.

There is a chance that after running this Rat Race we finally get to
the important position we were expected to have, to get the degree we
are asked to have, to earn enough money (for those in pursuit of money
is there really enough?) to be satisfied. But were we happy? Did we
enjoyed the road we had to cross to get there? Did we took enough time
to learn about it?

We should stop running the Rat Race and start with the life race, a
race to learn all those skills we'd like to have, to start enjoying
time with our friends, family, partner, etc; to take time for the
culture, go to a concert, the museum, the theater, read lots of books,

At the end... To be Really Happy taking into account that, in life,
what you'll really enjoy is the path, not your destination

Linux, Windows and more little things

I wanted to get the last post before this one to clarify the importance of those little things, because those little details are the ones who has made me return to Windows back from my Linux Experiment. This are this little things:

- Power support: I have both the advantage and disadvantage of having an HP tablet PC, this computer due to heating issues can never go to it's highest speed 'cause it gets really hot and shuts down (and most likely it is damaging the internal parts in the long effect). To get over it I have to be rally careful regarding the Power management issues and in Linux I have to keep looking for the computer to keep the processing speed to the minimum on a regular basis 'cause I had some times the problem I configured the processor to use minimum resources and from one moment to another it just got to use maximum power resources.

- Flash player in Linux Sucks: Nothing more to add.

- OpenOffice can't read completely accurately any doc, docx, xls, xlsx file and Office 2010 can read any odt file without problem. On the other hand the user interface needs to get updated to a different more simplified way.

- User Interface: It has some nice effects, Compiz is way better than Aero but windows right now has a better overall look and feel than Gnome which i think still need to be a little more polished, though it is better looking than the traditional Windows 9X look and feel it doesn't heightens to the current Windows L&F

- OneNote support: I have all my university notes in OneNote, I think it is a really good way to take notes, specially with a TabletPC and I haven't found the suitable replacement. I know there exists Wikidpad and Zim but they can't read my previos OneNote notebooks but I can't blame the other applications but I also have to blame a little bit Microsoft on that one, 'cause it is most likely that the restriction is due to Microsoft having it as a closed format unable to be read from other sources.

There are really amazing things I have to recognize to Linux:

- The Ubuntu Software library is really amazing, though it shows just a tiny little bit of the open source software there must exist.

- Compiz is really amazing

- It can do a lot of stuff with minimum resources (despite the weird way it handles the system speed) and it doesn't seem to get slugish as sometimes you feel a Windows machine feels.

I still have to give it another shot when I get more time 'cause I'm still a believer that it is a great alternative for those people who don't want to spend much money in their software (I say not much instead of free 'cause i profoundly believe you should pay for the job a person does).

It's the little details

Little details is what life is made of and you have to learn to enjoy both the good little things and the bad things and learn from them. Afterwards you grow beyond each of this things.

You know, the big things seem always too much but if you get to see them in truth they are nothing but a recollection of small things or the conclusion of little steps you make along the way.

Third day of Linux Experiences

Hey Folks,

I'll start by saying that one of the first things I did today was to open up my computer using Windows, just because I had to do one annotation in OneNote. Afterward I switched back to Linux and been working since.

The first thing I did was to attempt to open my personal life goals journal (done in Word ooxml format) using OpenOffice. Bad Luck. The formatting of the document (had pictures, text boxes and all that stuff) was really messed up, so I started looking out for a way to install Microsoft Office 2007/2010 on my Linux OS. The idea of this experiment is not to get 100% open source (after all by the Open Source Purity standards I shouldn't even have Ubuntu Restricted Extras and the propietary drivers installed, after all) but to get a computer in a really good condition for a regular user to be able to use it without having to put up a lot of effort. After all the Ubuntu idea is to have a computer to be able to be used by everybody and we have to take into account also that there are a lot of things that are propietary/company made.

On the other hand I had a particular problem yesterday, I started using my computer on battery and without the cooling board (it has fans connected via USB) to check out how long would the battery last. It lasted about the same as using it with windows and seconds after I connected it back again to power the computer shot down because of overheating (This HP Tablet PCs really have a overheating problem). and using it today I've felt it warms up as much as using it on windows. So there I have one mith debunked, Linux computers can use the same resources as Windows ones.

So far the experiment has been really good. I haven't had the need or desire to get to windows far beyond the OneNote (and posibly any job I HAVE to do with MS Office and can't be done with anything else (Sorry folks but though OpenOffice does a nice job I receive lots of ooxml type files that just don't open right on OpenOffice).

For those who ask what kind of job I'm doing to know how much power I'm asking to my computer:

To quickly resume what has been my work so far. I've worked with three virtual desktops provided by the compiz interface, managing both (at first just one) of the cores on a on demand/power save energy profile and listening to music or having a movie played in one desktop; chatting via aMSN (really cool program) and browsing the time loss pages (facebook, mail, etc) on the second desktop and using a browser with 5 to 15 open tabs on the third desktop.

Think Different

That's what the Mac people said some time ago, and that is a really true statement regarding Operating Systems and one of the first things to take into account when you are entering into an unexplored territory.

This past Saturday I installed Ubuntu Linux in my computer and had a very good impression of it. At first I had a lot of trouble installing the wireless driver, attempting first to make work an open source driver I ended locking it up to the system and being unable to remove it to put the right one, so by being am ignorant on the issue I took the easy path and reinstalled the system.

Beforehand I must say I've been a Windows user pretty much my entire life and been a little far from Linux so far, due mainly because of my past job experiences. Nevertheless I truly think that you must really commit to following the rules also regarding software and that's quite an issue in a region where over 50% of the software isn't legal. Though I have all of my software legal (except one or two games, they're really expensive) I know for a fact lot of people don't have legal software and don't mind not having it, and as part of my training as a computers consultant focusing on the little user I should really get to try Open Source alternative for those people who can't afford proprietary software.

Once this issue was sorted out and the correct drivers got installed I started Experimenting

with the system, first getting the so acclaimed Compiz visual effects to work (they're really cool by the way), later putting the system a little bit more like I'm used to (Have a confession to make, love the menu bar on the bottom and the desk as clean as possible, Windows Style).

So far I've had really good impressions. among those are:

• Compiz: really cool effects. Have to keep on browsing all it's options.
• Less processor use, thus less computer overheating (I have an HP Tablet PC and they suck with the heating issue.
• More responsiveness: I have a 2.1 Ghz processor, I'm limiting it to only 5252 Mhz and having the same response, even better considering the computer isn't overheating.
• Loads of software, free, ready to use and really easy to install. Even easier than the windows software (when using Ubuntu Software Center or debian packages, so far what I've been told is that installing without one of these installers can be a real pain in the ass.

And some issues:

• Initially the problem with the wireless driver (hate being on cables nowadays)
• A little bit of confusion with all of the Compiz functions. (A brief side description of the functions would be great)
• Lacking to address the issue with the other peripherals (tablet, fingerprint, etc)
• Ubuntu restricted Extras. Thanks to Zack Whittaker experiments and the readers comments on my second install that was one of the first thing I installed. This should be default in the installation (and leave the Purist Open Source crap behind, both propietary and Open Source can co-exist).

On overall effect I really enjoyed the Linux experience and it gives me the chance to keep using the files stored in my Windows partition, so the most likely thing is that I'll keep using the system at least for a week having an intense use. Though I don't commit not to get to Windows from time to time I'll be using Linux most of the time, and I guess I'll be having a good experience. On the other hand I'm starting semester right now and will attempt to keep using Linux as most as I can. It's good for my personal experience and good for my computer (less overheating).

On a final note, thanks for Zack Whittaker for doing the experiment and giving me the push to start doing this experiment and loads of thanks to his readers for giving me the chance to receive third-hand experience advise.

• Multi-card reader (not tested yet, though it appears to be detected by the system)
• Multimedia Buttons (working most of them to my amazement)
• Multimedia infrared control (not working)
• Iomega 1 TB driver (mounts and dismounts perefectly)
• Broadcom Wireless card using Broadcom STA Driver
• Installed OSs: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and Ubuntu 9.10 x64

Thinking about User Interface

Zack Whittaker is doing an interesting experiment that is going for 48 hours fully Open source. That got me thinking about the Office suites issue. Being extremely simplistic you can either go for Microsoft's Office 2007/2010 or go for OpenOffice 3.2 (I know on both ends, open source and propietary, there are lot's more suites and those will also have part on this post).
The major difference between this two suites is the User Interface, on one hand we have the office fluent interface (a.k.a Ribbon) and we have on the other hand the old icon and toolbar based aproach of OpenOffice (and most of ther office Suites). reading about OpenOffice's Rennaissance project got me thinking what would be the ideal User interface for an office suite, taking into account all the functions this type of programs have and what are User Interface paradigms that were a good option in the past but nowadays are old fashion.

When you get to think of that you see some new User interface ideas that have started to take shape, one of this is the removal of the menus on top of programs to be replaced by other type of functions (Windows Vista/7, office 2007, Google Chrome, etc) the minimalistic approach of some other programs, like Google Chrome, you see they are fond to the users, 'cause user just want to work on the stuff the program is supposed to do and not be bloated by all the characteristics the program has to offer.

Taking this into account, what would be your ideal User interface for a Office suite? Which rules should you follow?, which should you leave behind?

Birth Statement

Hola mundo,

Empiezo esta declaración con el primero programa de computador que uno hace porque en estos tiempos es momento de regresar a las raices.

Declaro que estoy muriendo, no se cuantos dias mas vaya a vivir pero a partir de este momento me dedicare a hacer aquellas cosas que me mantengan vivo.

• Comer bien
• Hacer ejercicio
• Cuidar de mi familia y mis amistades
• Disfrutar la labor que hago para tener sustento
• Gozar lo que me provee la naturaleza
• Escribir
• Leer lo que me gusta

Tengo 60 dias contados a partir de la fecha para cumplir esta declaracion y comenzar a ejecutarla.

Espero para entonces seguir vivo...

La comunicacion ahora

Les diria que cerraran los ojos para imaginarse esto pero pues tienen que leer, entonces simplemente imaginense esto.

Erase una vez un sitio donde toda la gente que vivia en el planeta vivia junta, un planeta donde sin importar donde estuvieras si quisieras hablar con una u otra persona lo unico que tenias que hacer es llamarla por su nombre y hablar con esa persona, como si estuviese justo al lado tuya. En este mundo toda la gente podia escucharse los unos a los otros e incluso aquellos mas brillantes en ese mundo podian hasta enviar al aire sus pensamientos.

La facilidad para comunicarse de las personas permite que aprendan lo que deseen aprender, que escuchen lo que deseen escuchar, que lean lo que deseen leer y que esten donde deseen estar en el momento que lo deseen.

Lastimosamente en este planeta hay unos seres que no aceptan que se de comunicacion abierta entre la gente sino que luchan arduamente por impedirla a como de lugar bien llenando la comunicacion de basura o peor aun, luchando arduamente por acabar con todas las formas en que la gente se pueda comunicar, buscando cambiar el arte, la musica, la risa y la belleza de la comunicacion sin limites por un mundo en silencio donde no se piense ni se comunique sino que solo se haga.

Este mundo es nuestro hogar ahora, podemos comunicarnos con quien queramos y tener a esa persona como si estuviese al lado nuestro a pesar que esten a muchos kilometros de distancia, incluso cruzando mares de distancia, podemos ver lo que deseemos, aprender lo que deseemos, escuchar lo que deseemos, leer lo que deseemos. Pero nuestro dia a dia nos nubla y no deja apreciar todas las bellezas que tenemos hoy en dia y para colmo de males hay gente perversa que desea restringir todo lo creado.

Es momento que reflexionemos un poco en eso.

A new world - Part 2

Actually there lot's of topics I'd like to discuss, this will be the post regarding the new world. Nowadays we could count about three modern generations. I was going to say they're divided in the older ones, the middle ones and the younger ones, now I get to think about it, that would be a really wrong assumption. Actually this division isn't even generations but lifestyles.

As I was saying, there's three lifestyles, the people who are extremely "responsible" regarding their duties, the people who have an utterly irresponsible regarding these same duties and the ones who hover around the middle. The first group usually work as much as their bosses need them to work, do all their tasks at home and do exactly what's expected for them to do, but are they happy?

The second group just have no idea what to do with their lives and they to be told what to do and what not to do and usually they just don't do it or try as hard as possible to run away from this duties, to not face them.

And then, there's the ones who hover in the middle, I'm one of those and in this group you'll find a whole lot of variety, the ones who hover around the first group and the ones who hover around the third Group. In the next posts I'll work on how these groups work around things. It's a lot related to my previous posts regarding the static and dynamic souls.

A new World

I'm in the point to take a new direction, thanks to a wonderful decision to freed myself from those who oppress me. There's a lot I'd like to write but not much time, so I'll just put here some ideas and later work on them:

• Work / Life
• Stealers of time
• The time to do the things
• The responsabilities

I'll get on this and other ideas in a couple of days.

Pensamientos de almas en evolucion hacia almas estaticas

Podriamos dividir el mundo en tres clases de personas, aquellos que no tienen la mas minima idea de para que estan en este mundo y simplemente la vida les pasa por encima sin que siquiera se enteren del verdadero sentido de vivir, esta el otro grupo (al cual me creo considerar) que tienen claro que su sentido en la vida es buscar la felicidad y si son buenas personas tratar de hacer un poquito mejor el mundo.

El primer grupo de mortales se la pasan viviendo sus pateticas vidas sin darse cuenta de los valiosos minutos que se la pasan perdiendo sin realmente buscar la felicidad plena y absoluta, son aquellas personas que se la pasan diciendo lo injusta que es la vida con ellos, que simplemente no saben nada (de igual forma no les interesa saberlo) y que por que no saben no pueden valerse solitos. Tambien podemos clasificar dentro de este grupo a un gran monton de personas que simplemente se la pasan haciendo en la vida lo que les ordenan o lo que el mundo les dice que hagan, suelen ser personas muy obedientes, en general amables pero que al final uno no los ve que van para ningun lado o para otro. Simplemente hacen las cosas en la vida sin ser concientes de lo que hacen o sin reflexionar sobre esto. A este grupo de personas solo les depara una vida monotona y eterna.

Hay algunos (como nosotros) que tenemos que sufrir durante la vida que estamos todavia en busqueda de esa elusiva felicidad pero por lo menos somos concientes de que tenemos que seguir en la busqueda y que hacemos pequeñas cosas en el dia a dia para llegar a ese objetivo. Estas personas se distinguen porque tienden a tener buenos argumentos o muchas veces porque son los callados, se les ve tambien divagando muy seguido, pensando en la razon de ser mas fundamental de las cosas, a medida que ganan experiencia se van moviendo cada vez mas a conciencia. No necesariamente significa que vayan a ser mas lentos sino que por el contrario, se gozan mas cada segundo de la vida y van por el camino a encontrar la felicidad. Este segundo grupo la lucha duro en sentido que estos la sufren mas que los del primer grupo porque estos sienten con mucha mas pasion y reflexionan mucho mas lo que pasa o deja de pasar y de esta forma logrando un entendimiento (nevertheless, ignorance is bliss).

El tercer grupo son aquellos que pasaron por el segundo grupo y lograron encontrar la felicidad plena, este grupo de personas simplemente dejo el trabajo hace tiempo porque para ellos el trabajo es solo otra diversion mas en sus vidas y al final se han ganado el titulo de sabios, mesias o algo asi.

Es relajado estar en el primer grupo, no piensan solo pasan por la vida, es sumamente interesante el segundo grupo, se meten en el barro pero asi aprenden de que esta hecho. El tercer grupo...

... mas de uno deseamos llegar alli.

Porque al final lo que importa es tener una buena calidad de vida

Un titulo algo largo, pero al final define lo que vengo pensando desde hace mucho tiempo. No importa que tan rico seas, que tengas muchos o pocos amigos, que tengas un buen trabajo o no tengas un buen trabajo, que seas un genio o bruto. Nada de eso importa si no tienes buena calidad de vida.

Ahora, ¿que es tener una buena calidad de vida? Tener una buena calidad de vida es tener salud, es comer bien y saludablemente (ahh, porque puedes comer saludablemente y comer mal), es hacer lo que te gusta y que lo que hagas sea lo que te guste, es sentir pasion en eso que se esta haciendo, es crecer como persona en cada momento y por encima de todo, sentir realizacion con las cosas que uno hace en la vida y que esas cosas le traigan felicidad a uno.

Pero no es que le traigan felicidad en el sentido que eventualmente vaya a ser feliz sino que durante el camino y haciendolas uno sea feliz.

Si alguien lee este post y tiene algun aporte de como tener una excelente calidad de vida, por favor compartan sus pensamientos.

Need of writing

What's Up Folks,

I've been AWOL from the Blogging spot for quite a while now. It's been about two years, but now I'm coming back with my batteries recharged and keen for telling the whole world my findings about technology, business, reflections, Wicca but most important, life.

For those who don't know me. I'm Alvaro Camilo Velasco, I love to be called Cami or Cams, Milo or any nickname (Even my sister calls me Freak) and I define myself as a life explorer who loves to search out for all those things you usually live but just to get the best out of each experience. I currently work as a Comercial Advisor at Nexsys and love to do consulting in tech related issues.

There's one thing about me and that is that I have a bilingual way of thinking, so I could write in english in one moment and spanish in the other, so don't be surprised if you see posts in either of the languages. In this case I'll write it in both langages basically because it's my comeback post.

Que Hubo!

He estado ausente estando online de la escena del blog por algun tiempo. Ha sido casi dos años, pero regreso ahora con las baterias recargadas y con ganas de contarle al mundo de mis encuentros acerca de la tecnologia, los negocios, reflecciones, Wicca, pero lo mas importante, la vida.

Para aquellos que no me conocen, Soy Alvaro Camilo Velasco. Me encanta que me llamen Cami, Cams, Milo o cualquier apodo (Incluso mi hermana me dice Freak) y me defino a mi mismo como un explorador de la vida que adora buscar aquellas cosas que uno usualmente vive, pero solo tomar lo mejor de cada experiencia. Actualmente trabajo en Nexsys como Asesor Comercial y me encanta dar consultoria en asuntos relacionados con la tecnologia.

Hay una cosa acerca de mi y es que tengo una forma de pensamiento bilingüe, entonces podria estar escribiendo en ingles en un momento y en español en en el otro, entonces no se sorprendan si ven entradas en cualquiera de los dos idiomas.
